In 2005, we put the answer in a methodology called, "Heart & Mind Learning". The one statement that captures its essence is this, "If you don't arouse the heart, you can't engage the mind".
Hundreds of trainers from around the world have learned this methodology in live events and online as part of our 3-in-1 Trainer Certification, and have written to us about how it totally changed the way they viewed and delivered training. Here are a few of the Insights of Heart & Mind Learning:
1- Learning is a journey, not an event. Engage participants in the learning process a few weeks before they arrive to the session. You do this by sending them information about the topic, items to read, puzzles to solve, and other pieces to ignite their interest in learning.
2- Session openers must be dramatic. The first 20 minutes of the workshop are crucial. They set the tone for the entire day. Use "dramatic session opener" activities that create instant interest and engagement.
3- Learning must be experiential, using real-life examples, simulations, and role-plays, not gadgets and gimmicks, to relate to actual life and work experiences. Encourage participants to share their real life experiences to validate the learning points.
4- Use great stories. Stories are great learning tools. People love to hear them and quickly absorb their lessons.
5- Enable discovery as a key way for people to learn. Give them the opportunity to discover the lessons themselves.
6- Use physical exercises to create energy, break the monotony, and get people to move, learn, and have fun.
7- Enable people to create themselves through their work. Learners must discover the source of action and motivation inside them, and learn to tap into it to create a world far beyond their normal expectations.
